Morning Devotion: It Is A Call To Humility

“The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

This is the word of the Lord. Amen.

The foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. This is another way of saying something that the Scriptures seek to say to us a lot. Which is simply: “God is God, and you are not.”

That is an important thing to remember. But I think that perhaps many times it can be misleading as to WHY it is important. You see, it sounds like it is God smacking us down. It sounds like he is putting us in our place. It sounds like he is downgrading and perhaps even denigrating us from whatever elevated position we may think that we are in.

And in many ways it is. It is a call to humility. To remember who it is that we are who stand before the Almighty maker of the universe. To remember what it is for us; who are dust knit together by Spirit; who are ash waiting to be ashen; to stand before what is power and might.
