THIS is the promise of the Holy Spirit: that you are SAFE. You are safe in your faith; for it is not by your strength that you maintain it. You are safe in your identity as God’s child. You are safe, not because you have somehow “achieved” the Holy Spirit;
But instead because the Holy Spirit has come to you. You are safe not because YOU have the Holy Spirit, but instead because the Holy Spirit HAS YOU.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus calls the Spirit a “Helper”, and even further, Jesus calls him OUR helper. He also calls the Holy Spirit the Spirit of TRUTH; and says that he is also our TEACHER. In fact, not ONLY is he our teacher, but Jesus says that he will help us to REMEMBER the truths that he gives to us. Finally, Jesus also calls him the COMFORTER.

God the Father loves you. Jesus Christ loves you. The Holy Spirit loves you. More than anything in the world.

Faith is only truly faith when it is faith that remains no matter what. Faith, therefore, is only truly faith: that blessed miracle that comes by the power of the Holy Spirit; when it is faith unconditional.

O King of glory, Lord of hosts, uplifted in triumph far above all heavens, leave us not without consolation but send us the Spirit of truth whom You promised from the Father; for You live and reign with Him and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the earth…
… SO SHALL MY WORD BE that goes our from my mouth. It shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”
You see? THE WORD WORKS. And if you let if fall upon you like rain from heaven; if you come and let God SHOWER his Word upon you, then he will grow within you faith! THE WORD WILL NOT FAIL. And God casts it out among us like a sower casting seeds.

Happy Baptismal Birthday Audrey Neugebauer!
“Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.” -Roman’s 6

We have heard of the progressions of the church in the places where Satan fights hardest against it. We have heard of the spreading of Christianity in places like China, where for so long faith in Christ was suppressed by totalitarian communist rule. We hear what the Holy Spirit is doing in Africa, where becoming a follower of Jesus makes you the target of radical Islamic groups.
Imagine evangelism like that: “Here. Jesus loves you. Believe in him. And your sins are forgiven. And you have eternal life. Oh, and large powerful factions in your community will want to kill you.”
And yet the faith is growing over there like WILD FIRE! Here? Well, here…
Here you don’t even need threats from people with machetes to keep people from coming to worship Jesus. You don’t need to frighten people away with threats of violence. Here, all you need to do is remind them that they only get one day to sleep in. EVERY week? God wants me to get up and do this EVERY week? What is he, nuts? Doesn’t he know how busy I am? Doesn’t he know how uncomfortable it makes me?
Doesn’t he know his place?
Can we imagine what it would be like if, as we were worshiping, and as we sat here, the things that we were distracted by: the little sounds that startled us and are in the background; made us think, “I wonder if that is someone coming to break in here while we worship and hurt us?” If we were listening for cars pulling up, and cradling our loved ones as they did, and praying for God to deliver us.
I cannot even imagine it. How blessed we are, I cannot even imagine it.
