Sunday Devotion: Transfiguration

A cloud appears above Jesus. And Moses and Elijah appear with him. And, as we hear today, he shines like the sun, and it is a glorious sight, so glorious that Peter doesn’t want Jesus to finish the work he has to do; instead, he wants to set up dwelling places and stay there forever.

And then God, speaking from the cloud, says the most plain, straightforward message you could possibly imagine. “THIS IS MY SON.” He says. “LISTEN TO HIM.”

I LOVE that. It’s so awesome! It’s so un-ironic! It’s so UN-misinterpreted! It’s SOOOOO “You can’t take this and try and have it mean something else! You can’t take this and twist and say “think about it…” You just have to take it and believe it based on the face that it is GOD’S TESTIMONY to you!

This is why I LOVE the transfiguration. Because it’s pretty much like God saying:

“Okay. You know what? I know that you’re going to try and think yourself out of this somehow, so I’m going to make this one easy on you. Here I am. I appear in a cloud, just like I did at the time of Moses. Here I am, and now, listen up, and listen good. THIS IS MY SON. THIS one. Jesus Christ. He is MY SON. So you know what? LISTEN TO HIM.”

I mean, do you know how hard it is even preach on the transfiguration? I mean, there’s no WAY to make an analogy out of that! It’s just God taking us and saying, “I don’t want any confusion about this. THIS IS MY SON. LISTEN TO HIM. Okay. Do you have that? Don’t listen to PART of what he says. Don’t just take the stuff you like. Don’t just listen to the part that fits in with what YOU think. And don’t listen to someone ELSE if they say stuff that goes against what Jesus says. Instead,

LISTEN TO HIM.”
